Winter Months And Soft, Supple Skin
For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling: They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema.
Dry, windy weather and relentless central heating systems suck moisture right out of the epidermis, leaving it tight, itchy and all around uncomfortable. Under these conditions, fine lines look deeper, complexions appear rough and flaky, and no one looks or feels their best. When you are outside, the cold temperatures result in a poor blood circulation in your facial skin. As a result, your skin does not get enough nutrients and oxygen and all the healthy, regenerative processes in your skin slow down. As a result, skin looses its healthy color and becomes dull or pale.
Moisturizer is the key to soft, supple skin. Apply product when skin is slightly damp. For best effect, pat skin dry instead of rubbing with your towel before application. Moisturizer is much more effective on properly exfoliated skin. Use a scrub in the shower and exfoliate facial skin with a mild scrub made for the face.
The thought of a long, hot bath on a cold winter day can be appealing, but over exposure to hot water can dry skin out even more. Keep baths or showers short; limit them to one per day and use lukewarm, not hot, water. A humidifying system can also help your skin remain supple instead of cracked and dry.
Licking your lips will not moisturize them and instead will help dry them out. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. Find a lip moisturizer that works for you and apply it often. Sunscreen is not just for summertime. Winter sun combined with snow glare can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face about 30 minutes before going outside.
These simple tips can help to keep your skin soft, smooth and kissable throughout the winter.
